CHELSEA, Mass. – In March 2017, Boston Magazine’s “On the Market” series featured the largest home in one of Chelsea’s most unusual buildings: Unit #10 at the Thomas Martin Lofts, 204 Spencer Avenue – a 1,379-square-foot, two-bedroom loft listed by Jeffrey Bowen of ERA Russell Realty Group at $500,000.
The building began life in 1885, when Thomas Martin built Horace Memorial Hall in memory of his son; for nearly a century it housed a Baptist church, and after the congregation dwindled the building sat empty until its conversion into ten loft condominiums – the project Bowen brought to market. Unit #10, the largest of the ten, is a bi-level home crowned by the church’s cupola, with hardwood floors, a marble-and-stainless kitchen, soaring ceilings, a laundry closet, deeded parking, and a small balcony off the kitchen.
This was a listing feature – the home was the subject, and Bowen was its listing broker – and the magazine closed by directing readers to him at ERA Russell Realty Group. The conversion was also covered the same month by the Chelsea Record; see the companion story on this page’s archive.
