Spencer Lofts — Video Tour
60 Dudley Street Unit 307, Chelsea, MA 02150
At just under four minutes, this is the briskest of Jeffrey Bowen’s Spencer Lofts tours — a walk through Unit 307, the 60 Dudley Street loft his posts kept returning to for its unique layout. Where most lofts in the building run open and rectangular, Unit 307’s plan breaks the mould, and the tour is built around that difference, moving through a home whose shape its own marketing never stopped remarking on.
Bowen’s written records for the unit stress two things besides the layout: partial views toward Boston and an unusual amount of natural sunlight. The posts place the home in its building context, too — Spencer Lofts’ one hundred residences were converted from the Everlastik shoe factory in 2004, keeping the brick-and-beam fabric of the old works. Unit 307 was offered across three separate posts between 2011 and 2013, for sale and for rent, and this single tour served them all.
That reuse is itself a piece of Chelsea record-keeping: one Dudley Street unit, filmed once in August 2011, then carried through years of listings as Bowen worked the building unit by unit. The master register shows the same pattern at scale — Spencer Lofts sales and rentals recorded from the 2000s into the 2020s, with Unit 307 appearing among both the rentals and, later, the sales. The tour survives here with the first of its record posts linked below.
