Spencer Lofts — Video Tour
60 Dudley Street Unit 123, Chelsea, MA 02150
Jeffrey Bowen’s September 2010 tour of Unit 123 shows a ground-level Spencer Lofts home with the building’s factory bones on full display: wood timber ceilings rising past fifteen feet and three solid wood columns standing in the living space. The tour also takes in the unit’s private patio, its deeded parking and its central air conditioning. Bowen’s post was candid that the loft wanted decor, cosmetics and lighting — the video lets viewers judge the space and its potential for themselves.
That honesty runs through the unit’s written record: the 2010 post marketed Unit 123 as a short sale and described a home whose value lay in its structure and setting rather than its finishes. The setting is Spencer Lofts itself — a factory complex built in phases in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, once home to the Everlastik shoe company of Buster Brown fame, and converted into one hundred brick-and-beam loft residences. Bowen knew it from the inside; he had lived in the building for almost three years when he filmed this tour.
From 60 Dudley Street, Bowen’s post pointed out, Downtown Boston is about four miles away, with commuter rail and MBTA bus routes serving the building. That combination — real industrial space at Chelsea prices, minutes from the city — is the thread running through his whole Spencer Lofts record, and Unit 123’s tour is one of its clearest documents: a working loft, sold as found, in a building he was still calling home.
