The pitch of this September 2024 tour is in its title: live in a Gothic church. Unit 105 is a bi-level home of 1,231 square feet inside the Chelsea Cathedral, the adaptive reuse of the church built about 1908. The video presents it as one of the few homes then left in the building, completely gut renovated and brand new inside the historic shell.
What sets Unit 105 apart is underfoot: reclaimed Douglas fir hardwood flooring, 116 years old, carried through a home with soaring ceilings, in-unit laundry and air conditioning. Like the Cathedral’s other residences it sits behind the church’s Gothic exterior at 163 Chestnut Street, one of sixteen homes in the conversion, with the new-construction Chelsea Flats next door at 157.
The video closes on the commute, which is the building’s practical argument: about fifteen minutes door to door to Boston on the #111 express bus, which picks up and drops off across the street and reaches the Haymarket Orange Line station using the dedicated bus lane over the Tobin Bridge.
